The History of Apex
As its name would suggest, this 15.4-square-mile town actually got its name because it was the tallest point on a section of the Chatham Railroad that extends from Richmond VA to Jacksonville FL.
This community grew slowly over the decades, aided in large part by the location of the Apex Union Depot.
Its proximity to Research Triangle Park definitely helped this growth – as did the development of a large shopping center in the area.
This community definitely became a place that people wanted to call home, as evident by a July 2009 survey. In that survey, CNN/Money Magazine ranked Apex as the #44 place on its list of top places to live.
The community ranked the town #9 in 2013 in the same category. In October 2006, a chemical fire in an Apex waste processing facility generated worldwide headlines when much of the town was temporarily evacuated. There were few serious injuries, and residents were soon able to return home.
In July 2009, CNN/Money magazine ranked Apex #44th on its list of the nation's top places to live. In 2013, CNN/Money ranked the town 9th for the same category.
