The History of Cary, NC

This community, which had a population of 135,234 as of the 2010 Census, was first settled in 1750. At the time, the settlement was known was Bradford’s Ordinary.

About a century later, the construction of the North Carolina Railroad between New Bern and Hillsborough went through the town, which linked the community to a major mode of transportation.

Alisson Francis “Frank” Page is credited with founding the town. The Wake County farmer and lumberman purchased 300 acres surrounding the railroad junction in 1854 and named it Cary, after former Ohio congressman and prohibitionist Samuel Fenton Cary.

The community grew over the years and today is considered a distinctive community within the Research Triangle area.
